Water Damage — First Moves
Act fast. Every minute of delay increases damage and mold risk.
Shut off the main water valve
Stop the source immediately. The valve is usually near where the water line enters your home.
Turn off electricity to affected areas
If water is near outlets or appliances, shut off the breaker. Do NOT step in standing water to reach electrical panels.
Call Act of Valor: 470-881-9911
24/7 emergency dispatch. We respond within the hour.
Document everything with photos and video
Before moving anything, photograph the damage. This is critical for your insurance claim.
Remove valuables and electronics from water
Only if it is safe to do so. Do not use a regular vacuum to remove water.
Start removing standing water
Use towels, mops, or a wet-dry vacuum. The faster water is removed, the less damage occurs.
Move furniture onto blocks or aluminum foil
Prevents furniture legs from staining carpets. Place foil between legs and wet carpet.
Increase air circulation
Open windows if weather permits. Use fans to circulate air — but only after standing water is removed.
Contact your insurance company
Report the claim as soon as possible. Act of Valor can assist with documentation.
